When Sony released the new PSP Go, it introduced
it's fourth version of the PlayStation Portable. Is the PSP getting
better or just smaller? Let's take a look at how the PSP has evolved
over the years.
The PSP was first launched in May 2004 and was
the first handheld to use UMD (Universal Media Disc) as its primary
storage medium. The original PSP also had other features that set it
apart from its competitors, such as a larger screen and the ability to
connect with the Playstation 3, as well as other PSPs and online.

Next,
Sony introduced the Slim & Lite PSP in September of 2007. This
console was thirty-three percent lighter and nineteen percent thinner
than its predecessor. This redesign brought with it new features also.
These features included USB charging capability, composite TV output,
and a brighter screen.
In August 2008, Sony redesigned the PSP
once again, making it more user friendly. The PSP-3000 was modeled
after the Slim & Lite version of the PSP but was also improved. The
LCD screen was improved and a built in microphone was added to name
just a couple of the changes.
The latest evolution of the PSP is
the PSP Go which was released in October 2009. The PSP Go is smaller
than the previous models of the PSP, featuring a slide-screen gamepad.
The PSP Go no longer uses the UMD drive, it has been completely
eliminated. Instead, the PSP Go has an internal flash memory. Games are
simply downloaded from the Playstation Store. Of course, this is a sore
spot for many PSP users because they will have no longer be able to use
their old UMD games. They will have to re-purchase games that they want
to play on the PSP Go.
So is the PSP Go better than the other
three versions? Only time will tell; but Sony has certainly ushered in
the future of handheld gaming.
